Excorio’s premise arose from director Renato Nicolodi’s obsession with lucid dreaming, which he claimed to regularly practice. While his two prior films were relative flops, Nicolodi believed Excorio would land him critical acclaim and mainstream success. Wanting the film to look like a “grotesque fairytale,” he employed childhood friend and illustrator Frank Rambaldi for visual development and promotional materials.
